तभी दशरथ जी ने आगे बढ़कर जनक जी के चरण छू लिए। चौंककर जनक जी ने दशरथ जी को थाम लिया और कहा "महाराज, आप बड़े हैं, वरपक्षवाले हैं, ये उल्टी गंगा कैसे बहा रहे हैं?"

इस पर दशरथ जी ने बड़ी सुंदर बात कही, "महाराज आप दाता हैं, कन्यादान कर रहे हैं। मैं तो याचक हूँ, आपके द्वार कन्या लेने आया हूँ। अब आप ही बताएँ कि दाता और याचक दोनों में कौन बड़ा है?"
